This is one of, if not the, most uncompromisingly brutal and grittily realistic action revenge films of all time…Robert Forster is a decent guy whose family is torn apart by a street gang, and the justice system (including Joe Spinell as a sleazebag defense attorney) fails him miserably…So he joins a neighborhood vigilante group led by Fred Williamson to help take down the gang that’s taken over the streets. Unlike, say, Death Wish or Dirty Harry, the morality of this picture is not as clean-cut and self-righteous…Forster knows that there’s  a razor-thin line between vigilante and criminal, and it’s only after everything he loves is taken from him that he’s willing to cross that line…
