The Lindberg Babe

Christina Lindberg, the beauteous Swedish girl with the saddest face you’ll see outside of an Ingmar Bergman movie, was the queen of European softcore in the early 70’s. Not just gorgeous, curvy and willing to get naked at the drop of a hat, it’s that sadness and vulnerability that makes her stand out from the rest. Her movies brought a new meaning to the word exploitation, as she always seemed to play innocent ingénues surrounded by creeps, and it’s hard not to feel sorry for her, and a bit guilty for watching, unless you’re a completely depraved raincoater (which, naturally, was the original demographic for her pictures). In Anita, she gave a previously unseen serious, realistic and nuanced performance as a nymphomaniac in perhaps the only film at the time to dare to portray the consequences and misery that compulsion can bring. In her most infamous film, Thriller: A Cruel Picture, the most horrible things imaginable (and some unimaginable) happen to her, but this time she finally gets revenge…and goes to it with a gusto that would make Pam Grier applaud…
