Stony Lonesome

This twisted little picture from Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dolls) was released in the mid 90’s without much ballyhoo. When John (Jeffrey Combs) inherits his ancestral castle in Italy, he, his wife Susan (Barbara Crampton) and daughter Becky (Jessica Dollarhyde) love it at first…but then they begin to suspect that someone…or something else is living in the castle. As family dysfunction and inner demons come to light, they discover that John’s half-brother Giorgio didn’t die when he was a kid…he’s just been hideously mutilated, abused and chained up in an isolated room in the castle for 40 years. So of course he’s a bit…lonely…and sets his sights on Becky, who happens to be blind. ‘Cuz, y’know, blind chicks dig monsters. Just ask Alicia Masters. Trouble is, he’s a little short on social skills and even shorter on temper. Castle Freak is uncompromisingly brutal and scary, a far cry from Full Moon Pictures’ usual high camp fare like the Puppetmaster series…and is not tongue-in-cheek like most of Gordon’s horror films. Pity it took me 20 years to get around to seeing it…
